On the order of Punjab Ombudsman, Abdur Rashid Khan, a widow has been paid pension of her late husband almost 30 years after his retirement. Mst Naseem Akhtar's husband Aziz Ahmed used to work as lab assistant at King Edward Medical Collage (KEMC) Lahore, retired in 1976, and died in 1999.

According to a press release issued here Thursday, the complainant disclosed that her husband tried without success for many years to get his pension, and fell ill and died in 1999.

She said that she approached the college authorities for the pension dues of her husband but the administration did not co-operate and all her efforts failed. After exhausting all avenues, the widow approached the Office of Ombudsman Punjab with her complaint in October 2004.

The Ombudsman directed the principal KEMC to immediately notify the retirement of late Aziz Ahmad, lab assistant w.e.f. 6-3-76, sanction his pension as per rules and arrange payment of other dues and GP Fund to the complainant.

He also directed that an enquiry be held for fixing responsibility in the matter and to proceed against the delinquents under PRSO-2000.

The college principal has submitted a compliance report to the Ombudsman Secretariat and the dues were awarded to the widow of the deceased in 2005, 29 years after his retirement, due to the intervention of the Ombudsman Punjab.
